Even though I was a teenager when the band Heart released their “Dog and Butterfly” album, I’ve always loved the song. Living on a farm with a huge puppy who discovers new things every day inspired me to create this piece.

I used two slightly different styles—one bold and the other more delicate—to capture the essence of my pup and his ‘friend,’ the butterfly. What you don’t see in this painting is the moment that inspired it. After the butterfly landed on a small green leaf, my dog sniffed its wing and immediately sneezed. While he was sneezing, the butterfly flew off, and I spent the next few minutes watching my dog search through the flowers, looking for it.

This artwork is a playful and heartwarming reminder of those simple, joyful moments.
