Darkfoot was given to Marjorie as a gift when she was a teenager. They've grown up together and Darkfoot helped Marjorie overcome the disability that came after she lost her leg below the knee from injuries received in a car wreck when she was twelve.
Darkfoot was green broke while Marjorie had ridden horses for several years prior to the accident. Due to the fact that the injury that took her leg also resulted in a two pelvic fractures, the young lady had to not only learn how to walk with a prosthesis but also how to rebalance her body. Darkfoot ended up being the perfect horse in that he immediately connected with his girl and she with him and didn't mind having her 'ride backwards' (something her therapist knew would help her learn to 'feel' how it felt to walk again).
In her words, "Darkfoot got me through the times of teen angst because he was always happy to see me. He was my safe place. I could talk to him or cry in his mane or just walk for miles and he always seemed to understand me. I love him so much."
