Turbulent Self

I’ve heard it said that we hold the key to ourselves. This thought struck me when I saw a reflection in an old Five and Dime store (more like a $5-$10 now), while rummaging through odds and ends.

I found a brass skeleton key with a high sheen. As I looked at it, I saw the reflection of myself and a lady standing beside me. Although I didn’t purchase the key, the idea inspired me to create this face by distorting and twisting skeleton keys and copper wire, then digitizing and printing it.

Many people immediately see a face, but others have seen a myriad of different things in this piece of art, including birds flying, butterflies battling in flight, a squirrel running from branch to branch, and even a human heart. Perhaps all of these things and more are keys to ‘us’—elements that make up who we are. This artwork invites viewers to explore its intricate design and find their own interpretations, making it a fascinating addition to any space.
