Snails and Trails

Sometimes a small creature can make a large impact. That's what happened one spring morning when I was sitting outside sipping my coffee after a nighttime rain had fallen.

From the corner of my eye, I happened to notice something moving. Turning my attention to the movement, I witnessed three small snails (in different areas) slowly crawling along the leaf of an elephant ear plant.

The trails they left behind, mixed with droplets of water that were slowly making their way to the edges of the plant and dropping into a small puddle below. The puddle seemed to swirl with each plop and it looked as though rainbows of differing colors were being made.

An idea was born and several days later (after experimenting with various colors) 'Snails and Trails' was finished. A couple of weeks later this painting was featured on a group whose primary research is on... what else... snails!
