The event that inspired this painting was simple but dramatic. I was visiting a museum and had the opportunity to watch a short film about immigrants who came to America in the 1800's. Walking off the ships, most of them had very little or no understanding of the language being spoken to them. Then, once they were met by family, they made their way into their new communities. One of the people who spoke during the film said something to: "Seeing the buildings in front of me - part old country, part new - made me feel like an orphan who was waiting to be rescued and adopted. A mixture of emotions - fright, delight, sadness and joy - flooded my little mind. I was home but it didn't quite feel like it yet."
