If you've ever seen a dahlia flower, you already know why they're prized for their beauty. When they bloom, their petals are not only unique but they come in a variety of different shades and colors.

The inspiration for this painting came about as I was taking photographs of them for a friend who grows flowers for several florists in our area. Lisa had cut a few, put them in a vase and sat it beside her husband's truck tire. After I'd completed my regular photoshoot, I began the trek back to my vehicle to store my equipment.

Closing my car door, I turned back to ask a question and, on the ground, saw the reflection of a dahlia in a puddle of oil and water. The result was a reflection that showed the flower in a dazzling array of color. So... the Rainbow Dahlia was born in my imagination.
