I started this sometime around December 2024 and finished it three months later. The basis of the painting is Isaiah 64:8 which says, 'But now, O Lord, you are our Father; we are the clay, and you are our potter; we are all the work of your hand.'

After seeing a friend's grandbaby's smile, I immediately got the idea for this project. I didn't know how it was going to turn out because I've never worked with clay at all (well, unless it was Play-Doh). But I wasn't as worried about that as I was getting their expressions correct. Now that it's done, I smile widely every time I even think about the baby being happy about being formed by Jesus' hands and how happy Jesus is that He's creating a happy soul.

Sometimes, especially in our detached Western world ways, we read the bible and think of Jesus as being this somber, very strict man - a combination between a warden and a no-nonsense scholar - whose demeanor is about as approachable as someone who has just woke up and needs three cups of coffee before you speak to them.

I, on the other hand, think of Jesus as being very charismatic. Even as God, He has a great sense of humor (I think you have to try really hard to read some of the conversations He has with people and 'not' hear His wit), He laughs freely and heartily, and His smile is contagious. We are made in His image, so unless He made terrible mistakes - which He never does - He feels everything we do - and one of the most power emotions we have is JOY!

If you don't feel joy radiating from this then I've missed the mark.

In talking about the potter and the clay motif, I think J. Jones says it best:

"While God is all-powerful and all-knowing, He is also an artist. Artists are very intentional in what they want to create. Sometimes in process of creation, their paint or clay or whatever media they are working with (people) seems to have a mind of its own (free will) and drips or dips wildly (us trying to tell God we know what's best for us). When this happens, the artist (God) simply integrates these abrupt changes into His piece or completely starts over (trials and tribulations) so that the end result is a true work of art. At no time does the media (clay) decide what is best or what it will be."
